New perspective on regional inequalities: what space tells us

This winter, two new papers from our colleagues from WP3, Paolo Postiglione, Domenica Panzera, and Alfredo Cartone were published about new methodologies on indicators of geographical inequality that can be used at different spatial scales. Different to previous proposals, the methodology aims at quantifying the inequality also inked to the geographical position of every single region. Together with the novelty of the technique, our colleagues decided to apply this method to different aspects of inequality as disparities of GDP and concentration of economic sectors.

In the aftermath two presentations followed on the same topics, the IV SNAR (University of Zaragoza, Spain) and the AECR (the Spanish regional science hosted in Madrid) to discuss further adjustment to the applications and results. Those sessions were not only an occasion to disseminate IMAJINE results but also a way to discuss how a large part of inequality is now due to intraregional disparities. In fact, thanks to the comments obtained in those presentations by academics and researchers, the results highlighted two main aspects. First, very local policies need to be always considered also in serious pan-European perspective. Second, more and more coordination with the different level government to balance a wise reduction of intraregional and interregional disparities is needed. A link to both the papers (open accesses in Papers in Regional Science and Regional Science Policy and Practice) is reported below. Hope you will enjoy!
